Yesterday evening, while walking to my favourite pub for dinner and a “cleansing ale”, I spied a little garden on the road side:
Some enterprising people have decided that if they live inner-city and don’t have a back yard then they will create a community garden on the street:
They have some mighty fine-looking broad beans for this time of year:
I wonder how many other people have photographed this little garden oasis? It sure isn’t every day that I come across some thing like that on the road 🙂
doesn’t that just make your heart sing! Beautiful

Never seen anything like it, love the concept!
Totally love it!!! How cool would it be to see these more over.
Hi Kel, Cindy and Herby.
Glad you liked the little street community garden as much as me
It’s like taking the streets back, isn’t it! 🙂
It is isn’t it 🙂
I posted a link to this post on a gardening / simple living forum that I’m part of to get some more info and to share what you discovered. Hope you don’t mind. Hope it generates some more interest in your blog too because it’s AWESOME!
Thanks Herby! I have been getting some traffic via the Aussies Living Simply forum and I did wonder if it was from something you might have posted there. 🙂
And a big call out to any one who is visiting from Aussies Living Simply – thanks for stopping by!
Heh I think this means your favourite pub is the Napier! Mine too… My friend and neighbour is part of the street garden effort, we have another one on our side of Brunswick St, corner of Victoria and Fitzroy St.
Hi orange. What a small world that I would write a post on a street garden and someone connected to it would read this blog. Don’t you just love that about the blogosphere! I’ll have to go and check out your other street garden next time I’m over that way. And yes, you are a master of deduction my favourite pub is the Napier – both for the atmosphere and the food 🙂 Bee
It’s quite weird how of 4 blogs I recently randomly started reading, 3 have revealed themselves to be Australian, 2 of which are fellow Melbournites — and the 4th I discovered is based near the town I was born in the UK!
The Napier is fantastic — and you cannot pass on their food for quality/value 🙂 I have a feeling that I’ll be having a Sunday parma as usual…
A little bit of synchronicity in amongst all the randomness. I like that!
Enjoy your parma!
Love it, love it, love it! I was posting about this sort of thing recently. I would love to see more this happening around the place.
I think that must have been before I starting reading your blog. Can you post a link to your blog post? I’d love to read it.
here’s the link Bee-http://cityhippyfarmgirl.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/little-old-man-with-big%C2%A0ideas/
Thankyou cityhippyfarmgirl. A really good read. I’ve posted a more specific comment on your blog
I am glad you got some traffic from ALS. I just know there are people there who will totally LOVE your blog as much as I do. 🙂
🙂 Herby thank you. That’s sooo lovely to hear!
I’m from New Mexico but my best friend is an Aussie from Melbourne! When she met me she accosted me and told me I looked Australian and was from here on out her ‘sista’. Of course she said this in her Aussie accent. I now say things like, ‘I’m very cross with you’ and ‘just ta bit now’!
But really- I love this rogue community garden.
Oh that made me smile 🙂 Is “I’m really cross with you” an Australianism? I never knew that. See you learn something knew everyday!
Oh and I love the idea of calling it a rogue garden. Seems to fit. In a lovable-rogue type way!
Lovely!
Glad you liked it Tricia!
